A Rough Guide To Carpenters In Auckland

A carpenter is the tradesperson who might just be the handiest one to have in your phone book.

Auckland has a history of great carpentry works. Sir John Logan Campbell was one of the men behind the famous Acacia Cottage, one of Auckland’s first buildings. We have the beautiful Gothic inspired homes like Highwic that have been well loved and are still standing proud today.

Did you know that even A.J. Hackett, our bungy jump inventing brethren was a carpenter by trade?

If you need to find out a little more about the current state of the carpentry field in Auckland, and how to hire one, read on.

Projects that a carpenter is qualified to work on

Carpenters in New Zealand are more like builders. They don’t just work with timber materials, they can also work with steel, ply board, concrete, and more. They can help you through from the initial stages of planning a new home right along to maintenance and repairs on old homes.

They measure and cut raw materials, use a range of power tools, can make furniture and outdoor structures, build walls and stairs and follow blueprints.

A carpenter may have received a three to four year apprenticeship by studying for the National Certificate in Carpentry and may be a member of the Certified Builders Association of New Zealand.

How much will it cost to hire a carpenter?

Carpenter’s rates depend on experience. At present, the cost to hire a carpenter is on average around $49 per hour in Auckland, but this figure may go up or down. From there you will have to factor in the cost of materials for the job too.

Ask your carpenter about what materials are best to use for your specific situation.

Hiring a carpenter on Builderscrack

If this is your first time on Builderscrack feel free to have a browse around to see what the site is like. The site is sectioned up into trades and geographical regions, where people with current jobs that need doing have posted advertisements. Tradies then log on and see all the jobs they can collect and get in contact with the advertisement placers.

To make your advertisement: include your area, how long you’d like the job to take, materials you’re considering using (or have already picked up), the area needed to be covered and access points if necessary. Any useful photos are a great addition to your ad too.

When screening candidates check their work history, feedback scores and trade associations to be sure of obtaining a stellar job.

Bathroom sliding door needs fixing (ESSENTIAL JOB)

Posted 1 week ago

Our tenant has informed us that the wooden sliding door to the bathroom has seemed to drop off the running track from the top (it hasn’t just come off the tracks, the bolts at the top have loosened and it’s dropped lower so it’s sitting on the floor and unable to slide). They’ve tried lifting it off the floor, slide it but it comes off the tracks and they're worried that it’ll break as it gets caught etc. They suspect that the bolts holding it up probably weren’t tightened enough to hold it...

I've noticed loads of squeaks, uneven floorboards and a couple of patches where the floorboards are damaged (all carpeted). At what point would we need to replace t...
