Women in Trade - Kia Kaha Electrical, Hamilton

We chat with father and business owner, Noema Johnson, about how he not only encouraged his daughter to take up a trade but how he is actively helping her to succeed in an electrical career... Hamilton based Noema, has worked in the electrical trade for the last 38 years. He's spent the last 10 years encouraging his daughter, Demi, to "jump into a trade". Now in her mid-twenties she has taken up his advice and this year started her training as an electrician. She is studying at the Waikato Institue of Technology (Wintec) on the Electrical Pre-Trade Training course, aimed at getting students ready for apprenticeship. Demi is one of only four women on the course and has teamed up with Mere, another inspirational women who is training in her 30's, all while having the pressure of children and family commitments. After the polytech based first year, each of the girls will be required to find and start an apprenticeship. Not only is Noema the inspiration and encourageme

Sitting across from a woman that packs so much into her days is inspiring, not only because of that drive but the clever way she has arranged her life to make it possible. Install new extractor fan for oven

Posted 2 weeks ago

Need new extractor fan installed over oven. Will need outside venting, ie making a hole for pipe it to exit. Suspect piping needs to be bought separately, as it is a standard box set for extractor. Our kitchen is in the highest part of our house, we are on stilts, so access for making the vent-hole will either be up in the roof, or scaling the heights outside (I think Health and Safety would mean it needs scaffold). Need advice please!

15amp outlet and sufficient breaker required

Posted 5 days ago

I upgraded to a large "single phase" compressor and upon receiving it found it is using a 15amp plug that may require a ~30amp breaker to function (it draws 17.5amps and 22amps on startup), my entire house looks to have 20amp breakers but not sure, I would like a sufficient 15amp outlet to replace the 10amp outlet currently by the compressor on the far side of the garage, or if easier/cheaper to replace the outlet closer to the wiring from the fuse panel outlet, I have 2x outdoor 15amp plugs for...

Kitchen and bathroom extractor fans

Posted 2 weeks ago

To comply with the HH standards, I need kitchen and bathroom extractor fans to be installed. I was thinking an exhaust fan (of the minimum diameter as per standards) would be fine. The kitchen has a "rangehood" above the stove but it isn't connected externally, it's one of those that just circulates the air! - I'm not sure if it's an easy job to connect this up or to just install an extractor fan on the wall instead - probably the latter.
