A Guide to Electricians In Christchurch

It’s been some years passed now since the Christchurch earthquakes. There has been much restoration and community coming together, like the Re:START Mall in the shipping containers, and various art projects of Christchurch city. It all takes time, but residents from all over the city from Avonside to Edgeware to Merivale to St Andrews Hill helped rebuild and reform Christchurch into the City That Rocks.

Have you had all your electrical work checked for safety since then? Or maybe you need a whole new house wired? Have some new downlights to install in your kitchen? Perhaps you just need to install some of those USB wall ports to power your iphone, tablet or other devices.

Electrical contractors in Christchurch can help you with any electrical jobs that you need done. These tradespeople are qualified to conduct electrical works for you. Remember that it is illegal to conduct any electrical works yourself, due to safety regulations.

What qualifications should an electrician have?

Your electrical expert should be registered by the Electrical Workers Registration Board. They will have completed their electrician’s apprenticeship, a Level 4 National Certificate in Electrical Engineering or a Level 4 National Certificate in Electricity Supply. Apprentices may work alongside a fully qualified electrician on your job.

Ask your sparkie if they have the relevant qualifications and check their insurance is up to date.

What works is an electrician qualified to carry out?

Beyond the standard installation of a power point or two, electricians are qualified and insured to conduct a large range of commercial and residential electrical works.

Here are some of the more common jobs that an electrician does:

  • Installing lights
  • Installing electrical systems
  • Repairing faulty wiring
  • Rewiring old homes
  • Complete wiring of new homes
  • Rewiring underground power to the home
  • Testing current home for electrical safety

How long will it take and how much will it cost?

This all depends on what sort of job your electrician is doing. For minor work, such as fixing a faulty light switch, this may take no longer than an hour. For newly wiring a whole house this will likely take several days and rewiring an old house a similar timeframe, or longer.

As far as rates go, for a singular electrician to come out, you will be looking at around $75 an hour. There may also be a call out fee, depending on your distance from the centre of Christchurch. This fee will not include any materials used either.

How to get a good quote

Mitsubishi heatpump remote sensor not working

Our home has a Mitsubishi MSZ-GE71VA-A1 heatpump, and for a while, the remote control sensor has stopped working and no longer responds to input from the remote control. The only way to turn it on currently is via the emergency cool/heat switch. I have checked basic troubleshooting steps with no answers, checked other possibilities (batteries in remote, fuses in main unit, testing for DC voltage across signal output diode on remote control), but no luck.

We have two outdoor sensor lights (one on the front of the garage, one on the house soffit) and one bathroom heater (pull cord style - unfortunately the cord snapped off) which we need disconnected and removed and new units installed.
