A trusted track record

Most homeowners consider two or three sources before hiring someone. A mate's referral. A Facebook recommendation. A Google search. These are all good starting points — but none of them tell you if the information is current, verified, or even real.

And for good tradies, that's just as frustrating. A strong reputation built over years of quality work deserves more than a few testimonials on a website.

Builderscrack was built to fix this. A platform where tradies have been verified, and reviews can be traced back to real jobs.

Verification isn't something we added later. It's been part of how Builderscrack works since the beginning, and it gets stronger every year. The system is monitored by real people, not just algorithms.

Tradies who don't meet our standards are removed. And the review history you're reading goes back further than anywhere else in New Zealand. That's what a real reputation looks like.

How we verify tradies

Initial verification
  • Before a tradie appears on Builderscrack they go through our verification process.
  • We confirm their identity and business registration. If they're a sole trader, we also verify their address.
  • Where a tradie has provided insurance and/or a trade licence, we check and verify those too.
Ongoing verification
  • We don't just check once either. Key business details are monitored automatically in the background.
  • If key business details change, tradies need to go through re-verification to stay on the platform.
  • And tradies who fall short, through workmanship or conduct, are removed.

A small badge that says a lot

It's simple; when you see the verified badge, you know we've checked it.

Mock Profile Verification

Identification

Verifying a New Zealand Driver Licence helps us confirm that the person behind the account is who they say they are. This makes it harder for bad actors to impersonate a legitimate business or operate under someone else's identity.

NZBN

Cross-referencing the NZBN register helps us catch outdated, inconsistent, or potentially misleading account information. We monitor the NZBN status continuously, and if a business status changes, we automatically prompt re-verification.

Proof of address

For sole traders, verifying proof of address gives us additional data points to cross-reference their name. Requiring a statement, letter, or bill issued within the last three months helps us confirm they have an address for service in NZ.

Insurance (optional)

When a tradie submits their insurance, our team reviews the Certificate of Currency. When a policy expires, the verified status is removed and the tradie is prompted to upload their renewal. This means you'll only ever see current insurance.

Trade licence (optional)

When a tradesperson adds their licence, we validate the number against the relevant register, and in some cases, seek permission from the licence holder. We're notified if someone tries to add the same licence to another account, which means only licences that have been verified will be displayed.

A note on how we work: We're a layer of due diligence, not a replacement for it. We've done the groundwork so you're starting from a better position — but we always encourage homeowners to ask their own questions too. The best hiring decisions happen when you are informed.

Builderscrack verified reviews

A verified review on Builderscrack can only exist when three things happen:

  1. A job is posted on Builderscrack
  2. A verified tradie requests to connect
  3. A homeowner chooses to connect

Each of those events carry a unique ID, and all three need to align in order for the homeowner to leave a verified review.

This means every verified review is traceable back to a real job, a real homeowner and a verified tradie.

You'll also notice some reviews labelled as open reviews. These are reviews a tradie has requested from past clients outside of Builderscrack — always clearly labelled so you know exactly what you're reading.

Verified reviews you can actually trust

This process outlines how our reviews are verified. This doesn't include open, direct or Google reviews.

1
Real job

Job is audited and has a unique ID. Review can only be placed when the job is marked as hired.

2
Real homeowner

Account has a unique ID. Mobile and email verified. Only connected with tradies we've invited to the job.

3
Verified tradie

Account has a unique ID. Verified by us. Invited to connect on the job — not open to just anyone.

4
Fraud signals

Combination of automated checks and human investigation used to detect and prevent fraudulent reviews.

5
Moderation

Sensitive, discriminatory, or abusive content removed. Inaccurate reviews can be disputed with evidence.

6
Right to remedy

7

Frequently asked questions

A verified tradie is someone whose identity, business registration, and address have been confirmed by our team against official sources. Where a tradie has submitted insurance or a trade licence, we verify those too. Every tradie on Builderscrack goes through this process before appearing on the platform.

A verified review is a review tied to a real job, a real homeowner and a verified tradie on Builderscrack. Each of those carries a unique ID, and all three need to align before a verified review can be submitted. Verified reviews can be for two things: just communication, or the work carried out. If you connected but didn't go through with the job, you'll see a verified communication review.

Our vetting process involves verifying their identity, business registration, and address against official sources, and we verify insurance and licences where provided. We're a layer of due diligence, not a replacement for it. We've done the groundwork so you're starting from a better position – but we always encourage homeowners to ask their own questions too. Compliance with the Building Code and any Restricted Building Work remains the trade professional's responsibility.

Yes. All verified reviews left by homeowners are published whether the feedback is positive or negative. Reviews are held for seven days before going public, giving tradies a chance to read and respond. The only time a review may be moderated or removed is if it contains abusive or discriminatory language, contains major inaccuracies that can be proven with documentation, or the tradie didn't carry out the work being reviewed. An honest, unfiltered record is what makes Builderscrack's verified reviews worth reading.

We have fraud signals in place that trigger a combination of automated checks and human investigation if anyone tries to game the verified review system. We keep the specifics confidential – publishing them would defeat the purpose.

Reach out to our Support team through the Builderscrack website. We're based in Christchurch, and we're here for both homeowners and tradies. We'll look at what's been recorded on the platform and do our best to help reach a fair outcome. We can't resolve every situation, but you'll always have a real person in your corner.

A verified review is tied to a job that got connected through Builderscrack. An open review is one a tradie has requested from a past client for work done outside the platform. Both may appear on a profile, but they're always clearly labelled so you know exactly what you're reading.

Google and Trustpilot reviews can be left by anyone – there's no way to confirm the reviewer is real or that a job happened. Builderscrack verified reviews can be traced back to the original job. And unlike those platforms, if something goes wrong, there's a local team you can actually talk to.
