Hi there, A lot of homeowners and builders that I've talked to are grappling with a common headache: dealing with engineers whose work is expensive, biased, and slow-going. This puts a lot of pressure on the homeowners and builders who are getting back certifications that lean one way, and having to push back deadlines because of late sign-offs. It's not a picnic for you, especially when you're dealing with a tight schedule and budget. At Studio89, we specialize in teaming up with clients

Auckland Electricians: Learn About Local Sparkies In Your Area

A quick guide to Auckland Electricians: What they do, how much they cost and where to find them

Ahh, the Queen City, the City of Sails, Auckland. We are a lucky bunch since the weather is actually warm in summer, unlike our more southerly neighbours, plus we have a rocking street art scene (K-Road anyone?) and we also have that geological cool factor, being built from volcanic remains.

Living in such a lucky city doesn’t preclude us from having everything easy though. What happens when the power goes out? (Hint: it’s probably that you’ve forgotten to pay your power bill or the whole city is experiencing blackouts) What happens when there is no power point to plug your iPhone into next to the bed overnight? (Who is seriously going to use the plug in the lounge?) What happens when your light switch starts giving you a shock whenever you use it? (Pro tip: don’t use the switch)

In all these instances, you need to find yourself an electrical expert to help you with your problem. You’ll be able to have someone out in no time if you follow this quick guide.

What is an electrician qualified to do?

  • House rewiring
  • Repair existing wiring
  • Install electrical systems
  • Electrical repairs
  • Install new power sockets and light switches
  • Install new lighting
  • Wire new buildings
  • Test your existing electrical work for safety

What qualifications does a licenced electrician hold?

An electrician, or a Kaimahi Hiko, usually holds a Level 4 National Certificate in Electrical Engineering or Level 4 National Certificate in Electricity Supply. All electricians should be registered with the Electrical Workers Registration Board.

When choosing an electrician to work with ask them to produce evidence of both of these certifications.

How to find the right electrician

The right electrician is just a few clicks away from finding you! Using Builderscrack to post your electrical works makes the process simple. Write up a description of your job, including what area you are in and once your ad is posted you can sit back and wait for electrical contractors to contact you.

When you speak to your potential contractor, feel free to ask them for references or examples of work they’ve done. Make sure you get them around to your house and prepare a written quote for the job if it is more than just a simple task.

What will it all cost?

This all depends on how big your job is, how old your current wiring is and the cost of materials used. Generally you will be looking to spend around $75 an hour getting out an electrician in Auckland. Obviously the cost can go up or down from there – you can hire apprentices for around $25 an hour but they must be overseen by a qualified electrician.

For small contracts, like repairing a light switch, the job may be completed in under an hour (but you will likely be charged for an hour’s work) and for large contracts like installing all the electrical work in a new house it can take many days to complete.

It’s the smarter way to find your next trade professional
