A Quick Guide to Fencing And Gate Professionals In Wellington

Love them or hate them, if there’s one thing that is always shared between neighbours, it is your fence. When you need to install a new fence, a new gate, or simply make repairs on existing structures you need to find yourself a fencing and gate professional in Wellington.

Your garden might not look quite like the Wellington Botanic Gardens or Eden Garden, but keeping a smart boundary around your yard will help your house to be more secure and neaten the place up.

Fencing contractors know how to correctly build fences to stand strong against the high winds in Wellington that buffet the city.

What sort of jobs do fencing and gate contractors do?

  • Tearing down old fences
  • Removing old gates
  • Repairing fences (depending on condition)
  • Installing new fences
  • Installing new gates
  • Building picket fences
  • Installing new pool fencing

They work with materials such as aluminium, wrought iron, steel and other metals, concrete, brick, wood (including pine) and trellis.

What do I need to consider?

If you are building a new fence you will want to look carefully at the style of your house and other houses in the street. Everywhere in the city is different: you may have art deco style, British colonial, or old weatherboard. Pick a fence style, material and colours to match the style of both your house and your neighbours. Make sure you decide on this together!

If you are after a new driveway gate then you will want to determine the material (metal is popular) and the style of opening mechanism you’d like to have. Manually opened? Spring loaded? An electric gate? Sliding gate? Think about what would work best for your space and for your budget.

How much will it cost?

This depends all on what the job is and the materials that are required.

For fencing, a 51 metre fence built 1.8 metres high will cost you around $12,500 to $24,000 in aluminium and between $5,400 to $17,000 in timber, depending heavily on whether it is painted. Remember, with fences you can often share the cost with your neighbour. To remove a 51 metre fence would cost generally between $2,000 to $3,900.

If you’re after a driveway gate it will cost between $920 and $6,100 depending on whether it is manually or automatically opened. Pathway gates will cost between $250 and $1,200, depending on the material used.

How do I hire them?

By putting up your project on Builderscrack you can have the contractor chase you to do your job. Include specifics about what you would like (or different options that you are considering) and the area that the project will involve.

You may receive a ballpark figure on the cost of the works (materials + manual labour time) but be sure to have the tradesman sight your property before agreeing to anything. You should receive a written quote before proceeding with works, and consider getting two or three quotes before starting work. If you are sharing the cost with your neighbour/s ensure they are also happy with the tradesperson you've selected and the final cost.

Keeping Puppies Safe - One Gate at a Time

Zeppelin, the Swedish Vallhund, has been a long awaited addition to one couples home. But before this bundle of energy could be let outside, some backyard gate improvements were necessary... MJ's dream dog had always been a Swedish Vallhund. After moving to Christchurch and settling in, the time was finally right to make this dream come true. MJ and her husband, Josh, tracked down a breeder, got themselves on the list, and settled in to wait for their ball of fluff to arrive. Once they got word their new family member was on his way, they went about preparing for his arrival. At the top of the list was "puppy proofing" their backyard gate. The Problem They wanted to feel secure letting Zeppelin out into the backyard without the worry of him escaping, and their existing gate wasn't doing enough in the way of reassurance. The gate was wire mesh, potentially "quite chewable" for those razor sharp milk teeth. This is where Builderscrack enters the story... The Solution MJ, a self conf

Fence replacement

Posted 1 week ago

The fence between us and our neighbours needs replacing. It's very approximately 30m long. It sits on top of a concrete path and retaining. For most of the length it is 1.2m high, except one section where it is taller (perhaps because the drop is steeper at that point?). We would want the new fence to be stained black. We're keen for two price estimates, one for a like-for-like replacement to the current fence, and another to match the style of the new fencing on our property (the black baton...

Fence and handrail job

We need a fence and a handrail for stairs leading to the flat below. Possibly a small gate too. The fence only needs to be 1.2m, functional but aesthetically pleasing would be nice too. Staining isn’t necessary, just the build. We may need to remove bricks to the left of frame. Open to discussion.

Side gates

Posted 2 weeks ago

The rear courtyard of our house is open to the driveway except for a fence built half-way across the entrance. We would like to extend this all the way across between the garage and the house, incorporating a lockable pedestrian gate, so that people cannot randomly walk into the courtyard. We think perhaps the best thing is to remove the existing fence and make a one-piece metal framework incorporating a gate, a total width of about 3.2 metres. We would probably want to face it with wood slats,...

New fence

Posted 1 month ago

We would like a price to remove and replace a boundary fence between our house and a park that it backs onto. I think the boundary is about 14 meters long. The current solid fence is getting old and creates too much shade in winter and kills off the lawn so we want to replace it with a trellis type. We prefer the horizontal/ vertical trellis pattern and simple cap across the top. We would also like a rail half way up to make the fence a bit more robust. We want, about 4m of the fence be...
