Types Of Home Insulation Available In Christchurch

There are five main types of insulation available in New Zealand; glass fibre, reflective foil, polyester and wool, expanded polystyrene and loose fill insulation. With the extremes in temperatures we face in our region, the right choice of insulation is vital.

  • Glass Fibre – one of the most common insulation types used, made from recycled glass and suitable for walls, ceilings and underfloor. It can cause skin and throat irritations so professional insulation is recommended.
  • Reflective Foil – does not meet the current building code for new builds, so is really only suitable for underfloor insulation in existing homes. Can be dangerous if not fitted correctly, so the use of a professional insulation installer is recommended.
  • Polyester and Wool –wool is the preferred option by those wanting a more eco type insulation. New to the market and is suitable for use in ceilings, walls and underfloor.
  • Expanded Polystyrene - made in specially manufactured flexible yet rigid sheets, expanded polystyrene can be used to insulate floors, ceilings and walls.
  • Loose Fill Insulation – needs professional insulation installation because it is a loose fill which needs to be sprayed using special machinery. Does get very dusty, so not suitable for use in roof spaces which are used for storage.  Suitable only for ceiling spaces.
