Key Questions To Ask Your Christchurch Bricklayer Before Signing A Contract

Before signing a contract with a Christchurch bricklayer, get all the details sorted out. These tips will help you with your brickie

Before you decide on a contractor to do a bricklaying project for you in Christchurch, there are some questions you should ask to ensure the job runs smoothly. Whether you are looking for a small outdoor area to be paved with bricks or undertaking major chimney repairs, you need to be confident that you are using a reputable and competent contractor.

This checklist will help you make sure you have covered some of the most important points with your bricklayer.

What sort of materials will be used?

There is a range of materials available to modern bricklayers including concrete pavers and more traditional red bricks, so make sure the materials being used are suitable for the job and will look right in your home.

If you are using a bricklayer to do repairs or renovations to existing brick structures, find out how closely the new work will match what is already there or whether any existing bricks can be reused.

How long will the job take?

Some jobs are quick and easy while others take up more time and may restrict your access to the property while they are being carried out. An experienced bricklayer should be able to give you a reasonable time estimate based on similar jobs completed previously. Check if the contractor is working solely on your job or whether they are moving between sites which could lead to delays.

How will the site be cleaned up afterwards?

Some contractors will include clearance of rubble in their quotes while others may leave you to tidy up. Find out before you sign a contract how the site will be cleared up and whether you are responsible for any part of it. If the job is large, a skip may need to be brought in.

What guarantees are there for the work?

A reputable bricklayer should be able to offer you some form of guarantee on their workmanship. Ask the contractor what this entails and whether there are time limits on making a complaint. If there is no workmanship guarantee find out if the products used in the job come with a warranty.

Does the job come at a fixed price?

Once the bricklayer has drawn up a quote discuss whether the price is fixed or whether you will end up paying more if the job takes longer or extra work is discovered after the project has started. This will help you budget for your renovations.

Are there references or previous work samples?

A good tradie should have plenty of happy customers who will offer references. You could also ask if there are pictures of previous jobs available or if it is possible to see work for yourself, for example, a brick wall that can be seen from the pavement.

If you have never hired a tradesman before it can be a confusing process but if you get answers to all these questions before you start, your Christchurch bricklaying project should be completed smoothly and without stress.
