Choosing Your Wellington Garage Door Specialist

Almost every home has one, yet it is something which falls off the radar for many homeowners. Forgotten maintenance, exposure to the elements and the age of the door are all contributors to a garage door which has seen better days. However with the large number of garage door specialists available within the Wellington region, having a poorly maintained or unattractive garage door should be a thing of the past.

Why Should I Hire Someone To Maintain Or Fix My Garage Door?

Every homeowner should regularly clean and check for debris and damage on their garage door, whether it is a roller, tilt or sectional door. Only a professional garage door specialist is able to safely fix issues, give advice on repairs or install a new door. Each type of garage door will have its own type of regular maintenance schedule. Check with the manufacturer of your door to find out what model you have or check with your local garage door doctor who will be more than happy to help you out.

A metal roller door requires several good cleans every year due to the contaminants which build up on the surface of the door, leading to corrosion and the eventual need for a door replacement. Other doors such as tilt and sectional doors use high tensioned springs to help with the opening and closing mechanisms. These springs will benefit from a light dusting to remove dirt and debris, with a small amount of silicone spray put on if recommended by your manufacturer.

The tracks upon which the door opens need to be clean and grease free, so a regular wipe with a dry cloth does the job well. With windy Wellington often bringing sea spray to sea facing properties, a more frequent clean with water and a scrubbing brush is suggested to stop the build up of damaging dirt and grime.

For more technical garage door repairs, such as replacing springs, fixing panels, maintaining the garage door opener and remote, a garage repair person is your best choice. In some cases, if you attempt repairs yourself the warranty or guarantee on your door can be voided by the manufacturer. Make sure you find someone who is familiar and experienced with the type of door you have.

Some manufacturers prefer you use a garage door servicemen who they have trained to ensure you get the best service possible and who can provide genuine parts if needed. However if this is not the case for your door, a regular garage door specialist will also help you achieve a positive result.

Installing A New Garage Door

Only a fully trained professional should attempt to install a garage door. With many door manufacturers’ custom making doors specifically for your garage and others who will provide readymade ones, it is up to you as the home owner to choose the type of door you want. A garage door installer may have trained in the installation of a specific brand or type of door, while others are general installers.

Check with the maker of your new door to see what sort of installer you need to use, bearing in mind that some require a garage door installer trained on their products to complete the job or your door warranty will not be recognised.

Whatever installation or repair jobs you need done for your garage door, you are sure to find just the right person for the job here at Builderscrack! Post your job now and let the tradies find you!

Garage Door Colour Update Challenge Solved By Our Tradies

A simple colour update for her garage doors was all that one homeowner wanted. But it proved a little easier said than done until a “can do” tradie was found... The Job Paulette wanted to update the colour of her metal garage doors from what she called a “bland new denim blue” to a more striking ebony black. The Challenge Paulette contacted the garage door company to find out if, and how, the colour could be changed. They came back with two options; replacing the doors entirely at great expense; or powder coating at a cost not much less than new doors, and required them being taken away for two to three weeks. The Solution Not satisfied with these options, Paulette turned to builderscrack.co.nz to see if there were any other options. She already trusted the platform, having used it in the past to find some great tradies. For Paulette, the “ease of use is the best thing”, going on to say that “once you’ve used it the first time, it’s easy to go back and use again” and

Aluminum garage door repair

Posted 6 months ago

Repairs required to the metal arm that is attached to the top centre of the door and pulls the door up. It looks like the cable in the winding wheel on the right hand side has sprung loose and jammed the door (also popping the roller in the top left hand side off). Instead of the fail safe cutting in, the door has continued to pull and has ripped through the screws in the metal plate holding the pulling arm to the top of the door and then torn off the aluminum at the top of the door frame....
