Excavation Experts: Heavy Duty Earth Works In Wellington

Are you building a new house in Mt Cook? Maybe you’re completely remodelling your tiered garden in Oriental Bay and installing a new below ground swimming pool. Perhaps you’re thinking about installing a mini-replica Beehive in your front yard and need your soil compacted for the foundations.

With any earthworks that you’re thinking about doing on your property, it is in your best interests to hire an excavation expert to do the work for you. So if you live in Wellington and have a job that may require excavation services then read on.

Excavation contractors work with a wide variety of machines to help you to achieve your earthworks projects. You may think that you could just hire a small bobcat and use it to complete your earthmoving project yourself, but it is always better to leave it to the professionals: they’ve been trained on how to use various machines from backhoes to compactors and they’re covered for insurance purposes to use the machines.

Work that excavation experts can complete:

  • Soil removal
  • Hole filling
  • Boring work
  • Trenching
  • Work for retaining walls
  • Heavy duty landscaping
  • Site work including soil compacting before slab installation for a new home
  • Digging out a swimming pool area
  • Other earthworks and earthmoving projects

Machines that your tradesman may use:

  • Excavators
  • Bulldozers
  • Graders
  • Dump trucks
  • Backhoes
  • Diggers
  • Loaders
  • Compactors
  • Skidsteers

Excavation cost considerations:

  • Soil/clay/rock disposal costs; this is usually calculated per cubic metre
  • Extra material cost if you’re building a retaining wall
  • Machine rental costs if not done by hand
  • Contractor cost per hour
  • Offsider cost per hour (most projects are at least a two person job)

Estimates of time taken to complete the job:

Generally, excavation jobs will take at least half a day to complete for a small job. If you have a large project with multiple stages or a large property, you’re looking at a timeframe of a week and up. Be sure to get time estimates from a few different tradies to see how they stack up against each other.

Remember you should receive a full written quote to look over from your trained excavator operator which will include estimates of the time, cost of materials removal and installation, machine hire and man hours required.

How to find an excavator for your job:

When placing your ad for an excavating professional in Wellington, make sure to flesh out the details of your job. Include where possible the measurements of your area/s to be worked on and what you require for them to do. Taking pictures of the area can also be helpful for the contractor to see the sort of space that they will be working with.

When you place a job on Builderscrack, the contractors will find you and bid for your job. Check their reputation on the website and don’t be afraid to ask them for other references.

Bathroom-Dig out and place on block walls and drainage

Posted 5 months ago

Hi there. We need a team or man whatever to excavate back some dirt and then place in block walls under our house. It’s quite a tricky job as it’s under the house under our stair case. And then we want a bathroom put in. I have an engineers report I can share with you and bathroom design from an architect. I’ll add in photos to this so you can see how much is needed to be done. If you can have convayer belts to get the dirt out that would be faster I guess. Looking for quotes

Flattening section prior to landscaping

Posted 3 months ago

I have an approx. 12m*5m sloping section at the top of my property that I would like flattened and compacted in preparation for landscaping. This is sloping section with a new retaining wall at the bottom of half of it with other half naturally retained by trees and agapanthe. Two shrubs in middle of section to be retained. Looks like no earth removal is required and can be completed by transferring earth from top of slope to retaining wall side. Access to site is up 40 steps via a pathway that...

Removal of material after a slip

Posted 1 month ago

I live on a private driveway that rises quite steeply from the street and which is cut into a steep bank. It services three houses. Due to recent rain some of the material on the bank has slipped and is blocking part of the driveway. I have managed to clear some of the material but it is heavy manual work and have decided I would rather have somebody with the right machinery remove what's left. It's not a big job as the below photos show. Note that Wellington City Council were not interest...

Post Hole Dig

Posted 1 month ago

I am putting a stabilising fence post in my next door neighbours property to tie the top of the fence, between us, to the post. The post is 125mm square and 3010m long. I have dug the hole to about 600mm deep and around 400 x 450mm open mouth area. It requires further deepening by around 415mm and similar open mouth area so that the mostly clay fill can be rammed. It will not be concreted in The problem has arisen with hard clay and hard work which at 81 years I am not quite up to....
