The cowl has disappeared... probably on a typical Windy Wellington Day... But we don't use this fireplace any more so capping the whole chimney off to stop drafts and weather getting in seems like the most sensible plan. That's it, nice and simple really, cap off the chimney with suitable materials to stand the test of time exposed to the elements, ensuring weather tightness and all that jazz.
