Damp basement

We have a basement room which was probably dug out and built 30 or more years ago. It's very musty and damp smelling. There is one part of the wall which has salt deposits forming on it. We'd love someone to help us understand the cause or causes of the dampness and either fix it or point us in the direction of someone who can.
