Whether your tiling job is a masterpiece or a quick repair, get the low-down on what tilers can do right here.
What sort of jobs do tilers do?
The main area of work for your average tiler is in wall and floor tiling in kitchens and bathrooms. This includes areas like bath and shower surrounds and splashbacks. They can also lay tiling in other areas of the house including floors, staircases, and fireplaces, and can use blocks to create small walls such as a glass brick wall.
Tiling professionals also have experience in outdoor tiling, including swimming pools, outdoor walls and floors, mosaics, and other areas. They can fix broken tiles, conduct regrouting on existing tiles, add waterproofing to tiles, remove old tiles, and polish tiles too.
How much will my tiling job cost?
If you source tiles yourself then you may just stumble across a bargain. Otherwise it’s best to consult with your tiler and help them to arrange to purchase tiles on your behalf. Small mosaic tiles can cost from $30 per square metre upwards. 6mm cork tiles can be found at around $30 per square metre also. 2mm vinyl tiles can be purchased from around $20 per square metre. Search around to ensure you’re getting a good price. Make sure to check in with your tiler that the ones you choose are appropriate for your area.
As for the total costs of getting your tiling work done, if you are looking at removing existing indoor tiled flooring then you can expect to pay between $730 and $1,200 for 15 square metres of flooring. To lay new tiling over the same area will cost between $1,600 to $3,400. Prices vary depending on the material of the tile and the size of the tile.
What sort of qualifications should my tiler have?
Before you hire a tiler, make sure to do a little background check on them. Ask for photos of previous work that they’ve completed, ask for references to call, check their feedback score on Builderscrack, and give them a quick Google.
Some tilers may have received a qualification through completing the National Certificate in Floor and Wall Tiling, which is a three-year apprenticeship program ran by the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation, whereas other tiling contractors have simply obtained experience on the job.
