Slope protection by planting/matting

We built a new retaining wall extension of about 10m length.
The slope above the retaining wall has been evened out with an excavator, and in the process topsoil and grass/shrubs have been removed for about 3m above the wall.
We would like to replant the exposed area with tussock (e.g., poa cita) or a similarily suitable ground cover. Until the new plants stabilize the soil, we also need to suitably protect the exposed clay from erosion (e.g., with suitable matting material).
