Repair Broken Closet Shelf

The shelf in my rental property closet has become detached from the back wall. I would like the shelf re-fixed in a sturdy, lasting way. When the shelf detached it damage the walls on either side—please minimise any further damage to the side walls when conducting your repair. I imagine several white shelf brackets (search "Bunnings Carinya Studio Bracket - White" for an example of the kind of item I am talking about) could be used to re-fix the shelf. However, I would like your expertise to assess the situation and suggest an alternative solution if there is a better option. Please ensure you use a white coloured piece of hardware. Please also ensure this could not happen again. Photo provided below of the shelf before and after it detached.
