Weatherboard repair + replacement

I'm currently in process of getting an external wall of the house repainted. My Painter has found one portion of a weather board which has rotted and neEds to be cut out and patched back up. Another weatherboard he has found though, is more badly rotten and he recommends just taking the entire board off and replacing.
