Insert tiles on benchtop next to the cooking hob

The bench top next to the hob is looking a little old so until we can install a new bench top we would like to place a tile/s in the shabby spot to make it look a little nicer for the tenants. There is a similar idea to follow on the left side of the hob if we can do the same idea? So basically black tile/s glued/grouted to the bench with some black waterproof silicon as i dont think boxing will be required to finish it nicely? Its a small job but at the same time would love to get the ceiling painted in a small spot directly above where we have installed a new rangehood (a tidy up only as the spot has changed). It would require someone to visit the site and check it out first. location clifton tce wellington central - there is parking, before or after christmas is fine. Thanks
