Gentle sand and polyurethane of outdoor furniture

I have a recently purchased and outdoor table, 2 benches (that run the length of the table) and a day bed (pictured is one half of the day bed, there are two like this). These are cracking and the retailer has instructed us to lightly sand and then polyurethane them. I have purchased all the materials as per their instructions so its just the job that needs doing. I would prefer someone who has some experience with this type of work as we want to ensure we follow all their instructions in case the furniture continues to deteriorate.
