I am one of three lots of neighbours who share a driveway/right-of-way in Box Hill, Khandallah. The drive slopes down, is concreted and has apparently been there for at least 50 years. I have lived here for just over two years, and have felt that it should be replaced at some stage in the not too distant future. However, one of the other houses changed hands a few months ago, and the new people have had heavy trucks and even a digger on the driveway, so that it is now in much worse condition, particularly the lower part. These people first suggested us all sharing the cost of replacing the concrete on the lower part only, and have presented us with a quote from the builders already working on their property. I feel, and I believe the other neighbours do too, that the whole driveway needs to be replaced. Consequently I've been given a quote for the whole driveway, apart from individual areas, eg where my car is parked, and areas leading to the garages belonging to the others. There is also the question of drainage, especially if a dip just behind my car park area is smoothed out. The driveway (apart from these extra areas) is about 30.5 metres long and three metres wide. The quote I have allows for 665 mesh and 20MPA concrete with broom finish. I have no idea whether 20MPA is what's recommended for such driveways. The 'new' neighbours say that once their present work is finished, there will be no more heavy vehicles on the driveway. But of course I don't know what might happen in future, so we probably need something sturdy. I must make it clear that I could not accept another quote without consultation with the other neighbours. I have no way of knowing whether the quote already received is a fair one, and I think the other neighbours would appreciate having more than one to choose from. I myself would be open to considering asphalt but it seems the others prefer concrete and perhaps they are right.
