A better pergola

Our current pergola/shade area over our deck was built to allow birds to come in and nest every night.... great for the birds, they are pretty stoked with it. However really awful for us, as there is so much bird poo on our deck and table I never want to use it! So I am looking for a better solution.... whether it just needs a new roof which is flush with the structure, so that there is no gap for the birds to perch on OR I am really interested in installing some sort of Louvre Tech system (it doesnt need to be that brand), which can tilt and retract.....
