Replace top of brick chimney with timber

We have a 1926 bungalow. The fire box and chimney is original. The fire box has a Living Flame gas fire installed in it and I believe it has a galvanised steel chimney pipe which runs from the gas fire place up the the original chimney. The currentl installation was consented in approximately 1995. The flashing around the chimney is leaking and we would like to take the brick top off at the roof line and replace it with a semi-replica timber chimney for earthquake safety reasons.
