Preparation stage- Garage door is scraped to further expose- White rust (a common type of rust that occurs in both zinc metal and galvanized metal)
After scraping over any areas of white rust on the garage door, a hand sand, over all rust effected areas is a good idea, before applying rust treatment neutralizer. The task of hand sanding/machine sanding will create a smooth surface before applying neutralizer. When using sandpaper- 150 grit and 120 grit sandpaper is recommended starting with 120 grit sandpaper first then a final sand with 150 grit sandpaper. Then once sanded smooth a final dust down is needed then the anti rust neutralizer product is applied either by brush or roller sleeve. This begins as a white clear liquid before the drying process is finished. Once dry the clear liquid turns black. This indicates that the rust treatment product has neutralized the rust effected areas.
At this point it's appropriate that a specified metal primer is applied to the garage door surface and followed by 2x top coats of specified top coat paint.
