Toilet making a high pitched squeal while filling, then overfills

Recently we've had one of our toilets making a high-pitched squeal after flushing. After a bit of poking and prodding around in the cistern, the squealing would sometimes stop. That's now changed and the squealing would not stop. Unfortunately, I discovered too late that it was overflowing, an overflow pipe wasn't covered properly and water leaked all over. We've switched off the water to this toilet for now and would like someone to check it out for us.
