small hole fix in gib board / plasterboard

a fist sized hole was punched into our toilet room / bathroom wall and the gib has been broken obviously. One of my flatmates started to fix it by putting a piece of backing across but then gave up. The hole is small. We move out of this place on the 23rd of November and have university exams in about a months time so preferably if it could be done before then that'd be awesome
