Kitchen Walls repair /redecorate

My kitchen has been rennovated with new joinery and granite benchtop. The walls now need to be repaired and decorated. The house was built in the sixties and the walls are a brown hard board. I have been advised that the walls can not be plastered. Measurements - can supply if needed. Job really needs to be looked at.
