Privacy and Aesthetics

The area in front of my house is completely open to the road, and is a very plain grassed area. I would like to create some fast privacy, and enhance the look of the house. I anticipate this will involve a combination of fencing and planting. Assuming I opt for a fence across the front of the house, (~20m), I would be looking for something attractive and durable. In terms of timing, I would like the work completed in April.
