Stair and Fire Guard

We need with help with baby proofing our stairs, kitchen and fireplace. We have 2 retractable gates to install but don't yet have a solution for the fireplace and bottom of the stairs. The measurements are a bit unusual and we haven't found commercial products that fit. The fireplace is a gas fire so doesn't get very hot but we'd like to stop our baby boy from touching the outside directly. The attached picture show the area. We'd like someone to come around and see if they can think of a way to baby proof it, then quote and install the solution before April 14.
