Installing a door lock (when the door frame isn't wide enough!)

A challenge! We purchased a "smart" door lock" we want to be installed on our exterior door. The problem is the aluminum frame of our door is too thin, so we can't bolt on the door lock. We are open to solutions (except for getting another door or another lock). Our initial thoughts were extending the surface of the aluminium frame into the glass area with a custom-fitted piece, and bolting the lock through that piece/the glass.
