New Property needs landscaping

He we have just moved into a new property in Kintyre Estates. We have ready lawn which is so far doing ok ( down 2 weeks ) and dirt on the surrounding boundary edges aroundn the property. We are not gardeners, dont like gardening and pretty much cant tell a plant from a weed ! Yes we are your worst nightmare! .We have two small toddlers and a dog so needless to say we need an easy care type of garden to fill this the 500mm of dirt that runs the length of the boundries. Its a new subdivison and most people have done their own landscapting, some looks great and some not so much. I was thinking my skills go as far as putting down white pebbles down everywhere but surely there must be some "easy to look after, hard to kill, dont need lots of love and attention" type shrubs or plants that would look far better or someone has some great easy care solutions. If you are keen to share your idea and cost for doing so then that would be great , otherwise its back to the just plain old white pebble plan :) We dont want to spend thousands and thousands on a garden that the kids will try to dig up im sure but a compromise from only pebbles would be great.
