Remove light fittings, install downlights

I'm currently doing up a 70's house and have a number of old wall and ceiling light fittings that I need removed so I can patch holes and paint. At this stage the fittings are spread over 3 bedrooms and hallway - all currently unscrewed and hanging down I also need new downlights to be installed. Not sure exactly how many lights I would need to ensure sufficient light - would need electrician to advise. Likely 3-4 in hallway, and 3-4 per bedroom. Looking to have brushed silver downlights, approx 10cm diameter.
