Switchboard repair? Fuse keeps blowing...

We've got a fuse which always blew when too many kitchen devices were used at the same time (usually kettle or dishwasher, plus something else). This same fuse has blown several times last week with only the dishwasher on, and now the circuit breaker has charing at the back. We talked to another electrician last week but he failed to get in touch with us to arrange a time... They talked about splitting the circuit and possibly putting in a new RCD since the switchboard seems to be from the 1950s. I hope I got that right but am sure an electrician will understand... The job is in Avondale, Auckland.
