Replace carpet on stairs with hard flooring, replace carpet with better carpet.

I have a 3 storey townhouse and I'm sick of vacuuming the stairs. Ideally, I'd like to replace my carpeted stairs with something that matches or complements my existing hard flooring (I think it might be vinyl?). I would also like to replace my existing carpet in the bedrooms with something better quality that will wear better than what's currently there. I'd like to hear options about doing this in stages -- e.g. doing the staircases first, tackling the bedrooms later, etc.
