I have a late 1990s era style home - on the second storey a few of the floor boards creak in one part of two rooms. They have been like that since I bought it in 2001, and it has never worried me. When we replaced the carpet in 2013, the carpet guy told me it was just a few loose nails. It has got marginally worse since then and I'm planning on selling up soon, so I was wondering whether anyone out there might have a relatively quick and cheap-ish solution (specifically, one that doesn't involve pulling the carpet up).
