wooden desktop blemishes

We have been using a desk owned by a family member. We wrote on the desk in ballpoint, and tried to clean it with baking soda. The baking soda seeped into the surface and has marked the desk in some places. We are looking for someone to come in, assess the damage and repair the surface, possibly by sanding and applying a layer of varnish.
