Wooden music stand - make height adjustable

We have just brought a music stand --- and the screw at the side is stuck and doesn't reach the pole (so the height can be adjusted). I screwed it in as far as it would go and now can't get it back it presumably because it's wood on wood. Either find a way of getting the wooden screw out and somehow extending it so it will work properly, or drill little holes in the pole at regular intervals and find something we can use as a peg so the height can be adjusted.
