Replace Floor board between Rooms

We have a floor sander/polisher coming on Wednesday --- . We have just pulled up the carpet between the dining room and lounge and have discovered that there is a gap in the floor boards where a wall may oncehave been, now filled with a plank of wood. We are getting carpets laid in the bedrooms, so an existing floor board could be sacrificed from there to fill in this hole, and then the bedroom gap could be filled with a plank as it won't be seen once the carpet is in place.
