repairs or replacement of support posts on verandah

Three of the posts on our verandah have begun to show some rotting of the timber near ground level. One is minor but the other two are worrying. we'd like to know the best way to fix the problem ie do they need to be fully replaced or can they be partially replaced or repaired. Also can the others be future proofed so that water cannot penetrate? We have no specific time frame
