Loft ventilation

Recently installed a ventilation system but the loft is too smelly. One fix is to improve ventilation up there, possibly with vents in the gable ends. The house has two gables, one facing East and the other South. There are also some white spots up there, not just on the wood, also on the lining paper and on the surface of the loft insulation. First thing, I think, is to get the ventilation done.
