Update Built in Cupboards

Have some built in (rimu) cupboards on either side of a fireplace. They are too overbearing and want to update/modernise them. I would like cupboards on the bottom and open shelving at the top. One side is also sitting proud of the fireplace so needs to be taken back so that it sits further back the same as the other side. (This will affect the ceiling/coving etc. I also need some type of lining fitted to another wall in the same room so that it can be painted. At the moment there is just the original rough sawn timber where the wall was knocked through. Also a couple of little minor jobs in the same room.
