Keeping your home cool during the sweltering summer months can be challenging. We’ve put together a list of simple, low cost things you can do to keep temperatures down…
With rising temperatures, it’s great to head to the pool or the beach to cool down. But when you’re at home, keeping cool can be a problem. Cool drinks, loose clothing and a hat will only work so far. That’s when it’s time to explore the ways you can cool down your home itself.
- One of the best ways to cool your home in summer is to open windows overnight to make the most of the natural drafts through your house. No doubt, you’ll be security conscious but rest assured you can hire a tradesperson to install security stays on your windows.
- Another smart way to keep your home cool is to reduce the amount of late-afternoon sun that falls on your windows. If you have large areas of glass facing the sun, shade these areas with awnings or deciduous trees. That way you can still get the sun into your home during winter.
- If shading from the outside isn’t an option then installing thermal curtains or blinds will stop the sun getting in during the summer. They’ll also help keep your home warm in the cooler months.
- Ceiling mounted or portable fans are an energy-efficient option to cool down your house. If you’re using a heat pump as an air conditioner, keep your windows and doors closed so it only cools the spaces you’re using.
