Project

Black Box

Project description

Nestled within a well-established garden, we maximised the connection between the spaces with a half-sized sleeping nook projecting out from the dwelling. Keeping the integrity of the state house form we opened the internal spaces on the upper level, providing an open-plan artists studio and gallery. Glazing was increased throughout allowing more natural light and opening the views towards Saddle Hill and welcoming the afternoon sun and allowing the spectacular sunsets to illuminate the vibrant colour palette within. The dwelling was insulated throughout.
The dwelling was reclad in Metcom 7 with the existing weatherboards retained to the street elevation as an homage to the original character. These were painted Resene “Pirate’s Gold” and add a burst of colour to the solemn, state house streetscape. A deck was added to the Western elevation to provide outdoor living and a connection to the garden that was previously denied by the austere form and design. The deck stops short of the full height glazing in the lounge to provide a strong visual connection to the landscape below.
