Not all ceilings are plasterboard GIB. Many are an old style fibrous ceiling which is plaster of Paris with hessian fiber mesh throughout and attached onto the the ceiling rafters or joists. Over time the ceiling can move and crack and cause it to sag and have a spider web style cracking and common soft spots and holes from leaks. These repairs need to be undertaken in oil base paints for adhesion. Often we come across fibrous ceilings done wrong with acrylic painted over enamel and adhesion is poor or non existent.
