bird-proofing chimney

Small birds are entering the chimney during the day and falling down into the woodburner, needing rescuing. I would like the chimney to be bird-proofed to prevent this happening, by installing a mesh or otherwise, without compromising the airflow. The chimney is on the 2nd storey of a 1920s villa, see photos for details.
