Water proofing external brick wall

I have a basement flat that is partially underground in an old brick house in Mt Eden. Damp is now getting in through the bricks and leaving a fabulous display of black mold! I was going to coat the outside walls with a sealer, however may well be out of my depth to solve the problem properly! I may need someone to render the inside wall?? Or render the outside?? or tanking? who knows!! Is there someone who understands the moisture content of bricks and different solutions who could help me work out a solution??
