I have an inline extractor fan in my attic above the bathroom which is quite noisy. I would like to replace it with the aim of reducing the noise level when it is turned on. My ceiling plasterboard is suspended from steel beams, there are no wooden joists to walk on. It's easy enough to get over to the bathroom walking on wall tops but to actually work where the fan is you'll likely need additional support. So experience with working on this type of ceiling is a requirement (and I would appreciate advice on how to get about more confidently up there myself). I've attached a photo of the thin metal struts that span the plasterboard where they are attached to the wall top. Those struts are 60cms apart in that area. The current fan is a Manrose model --- . The data sheet says 38dB(A)@3m noise level and 340 cubic meters per hour of air flow. I would like the new one to be significantly quieter than that. I believe the noise is coming from the fan intake, rather than vibration. The current unit is sitting on a pile of insulation which I guess is working fine, at least I couldn't feel any vibration when putting my hand on the unit and ducting. The ducting between the fan and the ceiling is also a very short run which probably doesn't help. I'm operating on the assumption that the unit itself is unusually noisy, either by design or age, but I'm happy to hear advice that it's a typical noise level and I should be taking other approaches to reducing noise. Beyond acquiring and installing a new fan I'm open to suggestions of additional improvements, but I'm inclined to take things a step at a time and see how it improves.

Asan was great to work with. Prompt and patient communication. Left everything he touched better then he found it and clearly explained everything I was worried about. Worked on top of my floating ceiling without falling through it and didn't judge me for being bad at jigsaw puzzles.
