replace the kitchen laminate benchtop on the wall as tile

just replaced old gas cooktop as new one, the engineer require the wall near the cooktop to be replaced as tile or glass or steel. the original material is laminate as as showing in the picture. about 200mm x 900mm. So we need cut off the red marked area in the picture and then tile it. Better solution then this is welcome too.
