Fireplace facade improvement

The facade around our 'insert' wood-burner (installed 2006 into an existing fireplace) is rather grim, and we'd like to improve it. In addition, the brickwork on the floor in front of the wood-burner also needs attention. We're not entirely sure of our options, but certainly favour a new facade rather than the deconstruction/reconstruction of the the actual brick fireplace as this would be a major. I though perhaps some slate or similar?
