Verandah or shade sails

We are exploring ways to shade the very hot west side of our home, which has a 15 x 3 metre straight wooden deck. We're imagining a verandah or pergola with opaque polycarbonate panels or several shade sails. The home is board and batten and does not have eaves, so want to protect open windows from rain also. Need to know which gives best cooling, weather resistance and long lasting. Thanks.
