Help this kitchen come out of the 1920s!!

We just moved into a new (old) house and the kitchen is disgusting. We'd like to attempt a renovation on a budget by keeping the existing stainless steel benchtop and some cabinetry/shelves. We'd like to put new cabinets under the sink and a new benchtop and cabinets where the 50s formica bench is now. We'd also like to get rid of the cabinets in the corner by the fridge and replace with shelves possibly but open to suggestion on that one. And re-house the hot water cylinder which is taking up space on the other side of the fridge. Oh and a new back splash to replace the rotting wood behind the taps, and some new tapware. The job is in Turakina, Whanganui.
