Bathroom refurbishment

I need some alterations to a bathroom in a rental property. It is quite dated, but has also been poorly treated by the previous tenant. I am looking for a durable and cheap refurbishment. I am open to suggestions on the most cost effective but robust solution. I am concerned to prevent water damage around the shower / bath area due to leakage.
